Thriving in a Noisy World: Tips for Maintaining Focus

Here are some useful pointers on how to stay focused in an increasingly distracting world.

Absentmindedly, you reach for your phone. You open your favourite app. You open the fridge door. Nothing has changed since you last did this 10 minutes ago, but you sortof forgot that you've already done this. So, you open a different app… but guess what? You were just there as well! Does this sound familiar?

Sometimes, we convince ourselves we're being super productive and crazy busy by staying up to date with the latest news and trends on social media and responding to emails immediately. Unfortunately, the reality of the matter is that you're merely distracting yourself from more significant things.

When you're at work your focus should be on work. When you're at home your focus should be on your home life. It’s time to take back control of your actions and in turn, your results.

No More Notifications

Open your phone settings right now and turn off the social media notifications. You don't need an update about who sent what Tweet or which Instagram DM yesterday and you certainly don't need to see it now. You also don't need a constant stream of distressing news updates breaking your focus when you've set out to work on an important task. If social media keeps calling your name, only check your social media at pre-determined times. Do the same for email, and ignore it the rest of the time.

A Healthy Routine

You can improve your focus significantly by establishing a healthy daily routine. When you set your routine and get used to it, you don't have to waste time thinking about what comes next. It's why individuals such as Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg preferred (and in the case of Mark Z, still prefer) wearing the same outfit.

What does your day look like? What is on your to-do list? Do you even have a to-do list? The best way to avoid distractions is to rank your tasks in order of priority. It can be overwhelming when you think about all of the things you need to do, so by putting them in order you remove the stress and overwhelm. Choose one 'win' for the day before starting your day. Even if the inevitable unforeseen hiccups occur, you'll still end your day knowing that it was a successful day.

Say NO To Multitasking

Are you a multitasker? If yes, are you good at it? Yes? Are you sure though? You might be surprised to hear that your attempt at multitasking is slowing you down, reducing your productivity, and in truth, you're not doing each task as well as you could be. By multitasking, you contribute to distractions and the quality of your work is suffering from it.


When your schedule is all over the show, when the world is throwing distractions at you left right and center, it seems unthinkable to take a moment for yourself. However, renewing your energy is vital. As your energy dips, your memory won't be as efficient and your stress will start creeping in. When this happens, it's important that you withdraw from that and take time to regenerate.

Taking breaks and engaging in activities that bring you joy can help recharge your batteries. Additionally, setting boundaries may also be a necessary strategy to protect your energy levels.

Staying focused in noisey and distraction-filled world is essential for productivity and success. The tips mentioned in this article will help you to stay on track and focused on what's important, but remember, you know yourself best. Lean into your strengths and plan around your weak spots. It's crucial to understand that being busy does not necessarily mean being productive. By being mindful and intentional with your time and energy, you can maximise your productivity and achieve your goals.
